35 Miles
~ 1400 meters Ascent
Extremely Hilly
Some of the Steepest Hills in the UK
( I start this Clockwise Route in Rosedale )

There's 4 ways out of Rosedale - One way (South) is flat and back to Cropton - The other way (East) is up the 25% Heygate Bank - and the most famous way (West) is obviously up the insane Rosedale Chimney Bank - But in Rosedale we head North for 'Castleton':

This is a gentler way out but it's a long climb with a few steep sections:

After around 3 miles solid climbing you enter the solitude of the Moors:

Keep on this road until you come to Right Hand Turn Off - Take Right for 'Fryup'

Continue along this road with some breathtaking views unfolding:

This road leads you onto a steep descent into beautiful Fryupdale:

At bottom of this descent you come to a Junction - Take Right - Continue along this rolling road - You will come to a Junction - Continue Straight Ahead and ignore Right Turn off for 'Dale head' - You come to another Junction - Straight Ahead for 'Street':

You will descend a fairly steep climb here and pass over a bridge - The road leads you onto a big farm - Continue through the farm and brace yourself as a very steep climb is starting - A 16% straight steepish ramp leads you to a Fork junction with a central Triangle Grass Section - (Looking back at the initial steep ramp):

At Fork junction take Right:

Up this 15-20% ramp to yet another Junction - Take Left - Very steep 25% section takes you back out of Fryupdale and onto the Moors again:

At T junction at top take Left for 'Lealholm' - Continue down this road until 1st Right Hand Turn Off - Take Right for 'Glaisdale' - Continue along this rolling road and pass straight through Glaisdale keeping on the main road - You will pass under the Railway bridge after a small descent and not long after will approach Limber Hill - Not a long climb but it immediately kicks from flat to 33% around a tight hairpin:

Up this and continue straight ahead for Egton (ignore turn off to the Right) - As you head into Egton you will take Right downhill before very shortly coming to another Junction - Take Left at Junction for 'Grosmont' - This leads you onto a steep drop-off down into Grosmont where you will encounter a true challenge in every sense of the word 'The dreaded Sleights Moor climb' :

Approaching Grosmont you will pass under the Railway bridge and head over the level crossing and it's directly from the Grosmont 'High Street' that this brute starts - Grosmont 'High Street' is a wee bit different to other High Streets:

Head up this 20 - 25% 'High Street' until you see a Right Hand Turn off with a nice 33% sign - Take Right:
Not long after this turn off 'the gradient sign' is as good as it's word as the 1st 33% section is experienced:

After you struggle up here it levels slightly - Keep Right here (ignoring turn off to the Left) - before the 2nd installment off 33% has to be overcome:

This is a very very tough section but slight reprieve is at the top of this ridiculous ramp - the climb then settles into one enormous back breaking steepish 10-15% grind - It continues like this for an eternity and the following few photos should convey the effort:

On....

And On...

And on....

Will it ever stop? Yes it finally does and looking back gives an idea of height gained:

At Junction with A169 take Right - Continue along here for around 1km before taking next Right for 'Goathland' - Keep straight on this road and have a brilliant fast descent all the way into Goathland -You maybe see some strange cars and stuff here as this is the town used for the TV programme 'Hearbeat' and it has that 'retro' feel about it all - Continue Straight Through Goathland on main road - Keep on main road Ignoring Turn off to the Left and fairly soon you will descend steeply and over a small bridge - You will encounter a 25% small climb coming back out - Keep on this rolling road for around 4 miles or so and take no turn off's until you come to a T junction - Take Right - Downhill steeply into 'Key Green':

At Junction at bottom of Descent take Left for 'Rosedale' - Continue along this lovely serene road and before long you will see a 1:3 sign - Again, get ready as another huge enormous brute awaits - The 'Delves' climb starts off around 10%:

And gradually steepens as it goes:

You then approach a small farmhouse and this is where the roads just goes mental - Straight up through a small twisty chicane thing at a 33% gradient:

After the 33% chicane it continues on with straighter 25% ramps for a short time:

The worst is now over and the road meanders into one enormous drag up and over the Moors:

The road finally flattens off and a wee bit rolling section is then experienced - Only one more small obstacle has to be overcome - the down and up section of Hamer Bridge:

The climb out is around 18% gradient - Up and over this - Continue on before plunging steeply down Heygate Bank back into Rosedale:

Back in Rosedale.
Finished!
