Name : RICHYBOY    Posted: 03/04/09
Ride Name: 58 miles - NY Moors - Route 1
Ride Distance: Medium: 50-80 miles
Ride Terrain: Hilly

                                                                        58 Miles

                                             ~ 1600 Meters Ascent

Very quiet and well surfaced Roads

                                                  Unique Scenery

Some of the Steepest & Most Demanding Terrain in all the UK

(I start this route in Kirbymoorside)

          Part 1: Kirbymoorside to Sutton-Under-Whitestonecliffe

In Kirbymoorside head west (towards Helmsley) on the A170 - Ignore 1st Left Turn off but after around 3 miles take Left turn off for 'Wombleton' - Take 2nd Left through Wombleton - Continue on this road (ignoring left turn off) - After a mile or 2  you will come to a Crossroads - Straight Ahead - A few more miles will see you in Nunnington - Take 2nd Right in Nunnington - Lovely quite road:

Along this quiet backroad until T Junction with B1257 - Right here - Only on B1257 a short spell when you take Left for 'Oswaldkirk' - Down sharp descent and continue straight on passing Ampleforth College to your left - Continue Straight on passing through Ampleforth - You will then head into Wass - The Incredible Byland Abbey will be seen on your left:

Head through Wass and just as you are passing the Abbey you will notice a small road off to the right 'Oldstead' - Take Right - Continue on this lovely little road - At junction in Oldstead take Right - This will skirt you round some lovely scenery - Start Readying yourself as soon the 1st serious obstacle will be within reach - White Horse Bank - Keep looking to your right and you should be able to make out the stunning White Horse lying adjacent on the slopes (it's just visible) and the photo doesn't show it properly - 'look at the very top of the ridge':

You'll come to a Junction off to the Right 'White Horse' - Take Right - a welcoming signpost awaits:

This is a very steep hairpin climb but thankfully rests can be acheived at each hairpin - Many sections of 25%:

Ascend around 200meters before it fully levels off - Continue on this road until T Junction with A170 - Take Left - And all the height you have just gained will now be all in vain as you take the serious plunge off Sutton Bank:

Head very steeply down here - The A170 is a very busy road so be careful! - Head Straight ahead for a mile or so into Sutton-Under-Whitestonecliffe.

                    Part 2:  Sutton-Under-Whitestonecliffe to Helmsley

Just as you are leaving 'Sutton-Under-Whitestonecliffe' take Right off for 'Thirlby' - Shortly after take Right again for 'Thirlby' -Keep on this road for around 4 or 5 miles - Lovely views of the daunting cliff face off to your right - Looking back:

You'll come to a T Junction - Take Right for 'Boltby' - Head through Boltby and take in small steepish climb - Descend off this and in front faces an extreme challenge - The outrageous Boltby Bank - No Corners to rest on - just disgustingly steep all the way up - Here's a good photo of what it really looks like:

And here's the photo's I took:

Up this trauma - Continue Straight Ahead (ignoring turn off to the Right) - Lovely views will soon be experienced:

Shortly after a very scary steep descent greets you:

Descend carefully down this and at Junction take Right for 'Hawnby' - Up little steep climb into Hawnby and straight through until another Junction is met - Take Right here for 'Laskill' - Another very steep descent awaits:

Catch your breath on this descent as very soon your gonna need it:

The descent bottoms out on a very dodgy bridge and immediately pushes out the otherside with an outrageously steep ramp - Not very long but looking back you'll understand why it hurt so much:

Continue on this rolling road - you will encounter a small draggish climb here but soon after you will descend all the way down to the Junction with the B1257 - take Right - The B1257 is popular with Motorbikers so care is needed - You'll have to negotiate the steepish long climb up Newgate Bank after a few miles - But reward is waiting with a brilliant long descent all the way down to Helmsley.

                                       Part 3: Helmsley to Kirbymoorside

In Helmsley take Left - Just as you are leaving the Town then take Left again for 'Carlton' - Continue on this road North all the way into breathtaking Bransdale - very quiet and well surfaced roads - On this road you will be confronted with huge long dragging climbs:

And also some short steep blighters mixed in:

After an enormous leg sapping drag you will plunge fairly steeply through a wooded section into Cockayne and basically do a sharp U-turn - Steeply down and Steeply back up:

The Steep climbing relents and pretty soon you are on a high plateau:

Where a flat rolling section is experienced - soon afterwards your on a great long descent -one more small steepish climb is to be overcome after the descent:

Not long after this final leg tester you will arrive in Fadmoor - At Junction take Right - Continue Straight Through Fadmoor - and back to Kirbymoorside.

Finished!
